In our first session Andrea asked me about my goals, diet, medications, health issues and injuries. She performed a comprehensive fitness assessment.

“We started working together in January of 2013. Since then we have adjusted to each other’s personality and I think I’m just beginning to see the method to her madness. Her approach is to build up your strength. The rest will follow. I know that is greatly simplifying what she does but it’s easier for me to say it that way.

Andrea provides me with workouts I can do on my own when I go to the chain health club in my neighborhood on my “off” days. I’m not that creative for fitness routines. When I do one of her “homework sessions” my inspiration and my motivation is imagining she is standing next to me saying what she does to keep me going. Powerful stuff. What is it she is saying? I don’t know. It’s hard to explain but I feel it. Like a ghost or a presence, in my head of course, that keeps me going when all I’d rather do is go to the Mexican restaurant in my neighborhood and have a margarita. At 500 calories, each.
Fitness is not easy. There is always the “5 minutes to flatter abs” or some such junk. It’s hard work. Andrea makes sure of that. And whenever it gets easier, she knows how to make it that much harder. Not too much harder, but hard enough. It takes time. It takes a longer viewpoint than losing 5 pounds for the new bikini season or for that reunion you want to look good for.

“I have been a regular gym goer for about 15 years and always maintained a very healthy lifestyle, but had never worked with a personal trainer in the past. However, in recent years, I had started to feel that my work outs weren’t giving me results and I had hit a plateau. So I decided to look into working with a fitness trainer.

“I have been overweight since childhood and on the weight loss roller coaster for about 9 years. Each time that I resolved to lose the weight, I would diet and exercise, the pounds would start shedding off, and I’d feel great… until I hit a brick wall. I’d hover around 210 lbs for weeks. I’d lose a pound here, gain two pounds there, and my appetite would get harder and harder to manage the more I’d try to get back on track. Eventually I’d give up and the pounds would return in force.

“Before I worked with Andrea, I had personal health issues, uneven strength on my body due to knee surgery that was 10 years ago, and not much experience with weight training. “If you want true balance in your life, then Andrea King Lane is the answer. In May of 2014,
I was using crutches, at times, to get around. I have severe arthritis of the knees and my doctor was looking to replace them in the fall/2014. I was completely crushed, as I had been athletic most of my life and due to the knees slowing me down drastically, I became over weight, tired and was taking 4 Aleve a day just to get around…a true let down at 50!
My doctor decided to try gel injections and told me to try and strengthen my knees and legs through exercise but how, I was in extreme pain. I could barely move after sitting for long periods and not to mention how long it took me to get out of bed in the morning or get down a flight of stairs (I would go down stairs backwards to lessen the pain). “When I decided to see Andrea I had just completed my eighth marathon (with a PR) and finished up a year long goal of doing at least one half marathon every month. About 7 months into it, I noticed my body not responding to the running like it once had. By year end, I gained 8lbs and IT WAS NOT MUSCLE. I did not feel strong at all!

Andrea ingrained two valuable lessons in me: consistency and control.
“In July 2011, I was at my wit’s end. I had gained a solid 20lbs since my wedding day 3 years earlier, and while I had always been active, I just couldn’t seem to shake the weight off. I was never a big eater, but I have never been consistent with workouts. I was also traveling a lot and couldn’t seem to stick with a schedule. Thinking I just needed someone to hold me accountable for working out, I looked for a personal trainer.
Andrea took a holistic approach on training. She combined functional training with great nutritional advice, and took into consideration my hectic work schedule and personal preferences.
She told me to keep a food log. It helped identified the “bombs” in my daily eating habits and made me face reality: I was NOT eating healthy. Andrea gave me small goals each week, to work toward: “No, do not go to Wendy’s,” “Only eat ice cream one night a week,” “Avoid carbs one meal a day.” The advice was much better than doing a complete overhaul at once. I felt like I wasn’t being set up to fail.
Functional training, in my opinion, is the only way to train. Andrea explained to me that by working several different body parts at one time, the overall results would be better. Simply, she was right. But the first few weeks were brutal.
Don’t be fooled by the small package. She is a tough cookie! And she can identify an excuse a mile away. She WILL push you. But equally important, she pushed me to MY limit. When it was clear I was working way beyond my physical level, she scaled down the exercise. This was key in doing exercises safely and not getting injured. A good trainer knows when to push and when to stop.
